Banks Charge $34 to Overdraft. Chime Charges $0.

Your bank charges $34 the moment your balance dips below zero — even if you overdrew by two dollars. Chime charges nothing. Its SpotMe feature covers overdrafts up to $200 with zero fees, but it won’t work until you switch it on, and most people never do.

Here’s exactly what SpotMe is, how to activate it in four steps, what it does and doesn’t cover, and — if you’re not ready to leave your current bank — the one phone call that can get a traditional overdraft fee refunded.

What Is Chime SpotMe (and Why It’s Free)?

SpotMe is Chime’s fee-free overdraft feature. When your purchase would push your balance negative, Chime covers the difference up to your limit instead of declining the card or charging a fee. Your next deposit automatically pays it back.

The key difference from a normal bank: there’s no overdraft fee, no interest, and no minimum balance requirement. A traditional bank treats an overdraft as a $34 penalty. Chime treats it as a short, free spot.

⚠️ The catch: SpotMe only covers debit card purchases and cash withdrawals. It does not cover ACH transfers, bill pay, or Chime Checkbook payments. More on that below.

Chime is a fintech company, not a bank itself; banking services are provided by partner banks that are FDIC-insured. You can read the specifics on Chime’s own SpotMe page.

How to Activate SpotMe in 4 Steps

SpotMe isn’t automatic. You have to open an account, fund it with direct deposit, and toggle the feature on. Here’s the whole path.

STEP 1

Open a Chime Checking Account. Sign up through the app or website. There’s no credit check and no monthly fee. Chime Checking Account

STEP 2

Activate your Chime Visa debit card. SpotMe only works on card purchases and ATM withdrawals, so the card has to be active.

STEP 3

Set up qualifying direct deposit. You need $200 or more in direct deposits within a 34-day period — a paycheck, government benefits, or similar. This is the eligibility trigger.

STEP 4

Turn SpotMe on. In the app, tap Settings → SpotMe and toggle it on. You’ll see your starting limit right there.

Once it’s on, coverage is automatic every time you’d otherwise overdraw. You never call anyone or request an approval.

SpotMe Limits: What You’re Actually Covered For

Everyone starts small. Chime opens SpotMe with a $20 limit and raises it over time based on your account history, direct deposit amount and frequency, and spending activity. The published ceiling is $200, though Chime sets each person’s limit individually.

Here’s what SpotMe covers versus what trips people up:

Feature Details
Starting limit $20
Maximum limit Up to $200
Overdraft fee $0
Interest charged $0
Eligibility $200+ in direct deposits (34-day window)
Covers Debit card purchases, ATM cash withdrawals
Does NOT cover ACH transfers, bill pay, Chime Checkbook, some digital wallet loads
Repayment Automatic from your next deposit

That “does NOT cover” row is the part most guides skip. If your electric bill goes out as an ACH payment and your balance is short, SpotMe will not catch it — the payment can bounce. Time your bills for after payday, or keep a small buffer for the automated ones.

To grow your limit, keep your direct deposits steady and use the card regularly. Chime reviews limits automatically; there’s no button to request more, though you can invite friends for occasional temporary boosts.

Still at a Traditional Bank? One Call Can Waive the Fee

Not ready to switch yet? If a big bank just hit you with a $34 overdraft fee, you can often get it refunded — banks quietly reverse these all the time to keep customers. You just have to ask correctly.

Call the number on the back of your card and use this script:

“Hi, I noticed a $34 overdraft fee on my account from [date]. I’ve been a customer for [X years] and this is the first time this has happened. I’d really appreciate it if you could waive it as a one-time courtesy.”

Three levers make this work: long-time customer, first-time occurrence, and if it applies, hardship. Stay polite and specific. If the first rep says no, thank them and call back later — a different agent may say yes. Most banks allow one or two courtesy reversals a year.

This is a patch, not a fix. If you’re overdrafting regularly, the fee will keep coming back, and that’s the real argument for moving to an account that charges $0 by design.

Overdraft Fees by Bank — What You’re Escaping

The CFPB finalized a rule in late 2024 that would have capped overdraft fees at around $5 — but Congress rescinded it in April 2025, so most big banks can charge freely again. Here’s roughly what you’re paying now, per Bankrate’s overdraft fee data:

Bank Typical overdraft fee
Chase $34
Wells Fargo $35
PNC $36
Regions $36
Bank of America $10
Capital One $0
Ally $0
Chime (SpotMe) $0

A few banks — Bank of America, Capital One, Ally — have already cut or eliminated the fee. But if you’re at Chase, Wells Fargo, or a regional bank, one bad week can cost you $70+ in fees on money you didn’t even have. Over a year, frequent overdrafters lose hundreds.

FAQ

Does SpotMe affect my credit score?

No. SpotMe isn’t a loan reported to credit bureaus, and there’s no credit check to qualify. It won’t help or hurt your score.

What happens if I can’t repay my SpotMe balance?

Repayment is automatic from your next deposit, so you can’t really “miss” it. If your balance stays negative, Chime may lower your limit, but there’s no fee or interest and it’s not sent to collections.

Can I increase my SpotMe limit?

Not on demand. Chime raises limits automatically based on your direct deposit history and account activity. Keep deposits consistent and use your card, and the limit tends to climb toward the $200 max.

Does Chime work with Zelle?

Yes. Chime added native Zelle support in its app, so you can send and receive money with Zelle users. Note that Zelle and ACH-style transfers are not covered by SpotMe.

Is Chime a real bank and is my money safe?

Chime is a fintech, and banking services come from FDIC-insured partner banks. Your deposits are insured up to the standard $250,000 limit through those partners.

Does SpotMe cover my automatic bill payments?

No. SpotMe covers debit card purchases and ATM withdrawals only — not ACH bill pay. Schedule automated bills for right after payday to avoid a bounce.

Bottom line: if overdraft fees keep nicking you, the fastest fix is an account that charges $0 by design. Open Chime, hit $200 in direct deposits, and flip SpotMe on.
