GPT-6 Astra vs Claude Fable 5.1: Is Either Worth It?

GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1 are the two most expensive AI models most people can get their hands on right now. On paper they even cost the same: $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens through each company’s API.

But what your $20 a month actually unlocks is completely different. And there’s a third model, released this week, that makes paying for either one a harder sell.

⚡ The short answer

  • Pay for Astra if you already live in ChatGPT, do heavy science or data work, and can justify a $100+ Pro plan.
  • Pay for Fable 5.1 if you write code or do front-end design and are on Claude Max ($100+), where it’s included.
  • On a $20 budget, neither is really included in the regular chat window. That’s the part the launch posts gloss over.

What does each $20 plan actually include?

This is where most comparisons go wrong. The cheap plans technically “have” these models, with big asterisks.

Plan Price/mo Top-model access
ChatGPT Go $8 No Astra
ChatGPT Plus $20 Astra only in the Work and Codex modes, on a separate metered allowance. Not in regular chat.
ChatGPT Pro $100 GPT-6 Pro (powered by Astra) in chat, 50 messages/week shared with GPT-5.6 Sol Pro
ChatGPT Pro $200 200 GPT-6 Pro messages/week (new sign-ups currently paused)
Claude Pro $20 ($200/yr) Fable 5.1 not included; pay-as-you-go usage credits only
Claude Max $100 / $200 Fable 5.1 included, up to 50% of your weekly limit

💡 The honest version: the entry ticket for either model is really about $100 a month. Below that, you’re either switching modes (ChatGPT) or paying per use on top of your subscription (Claude).

If you’re on Claude Pro, at least make sure you aren’t paying monthly when annual is cheaper. Claude Pro annual vs monthly billing

If you load $20 of API credit, how far does it go?

The API is the pay-as-you-go route: no subscription, you pay only for what you use. Both models list the same base price, so the difference comes down to caching and how many tokens each model burns.

Here’s a realistic estimate for three kinds of work. The math assumes list prices and no batch discounts:

$20 of credit buys about… GPT-6 Astra Fable 5.1 Opus 5.5
Chat turns (3K in, 1.5K out incl. reasoning) ~190 ~190 ~475
Long-document summaries (40K in, 2K out) ~40 ~40 ~100
Coding sessions (1.5M cached + 300K fresh in, 150K out) ~1.7 ~1.8 ~4.4

A few things change the real number:

  • Cached reads are where Fable is cheaper. Fable 5.1 charges $0.25 per million for cached input versus $1.00 for Astra. In long coding sessions that re-read the same files, that adds up.
  • Astra has a price cliff. Any single request over 272K input tokens is billed at double the input rate and 1.5x output, for the whole request.
  • Astra has a half-price “Flex” tier if you can wait longer for answers, which roughly doubles every number in its column.
  • Fable tends to use more tokens per task. Reviewers below repeatedly mention it burning through budgets faster than expected, so treat its column as a best case.

👀 Keep reading, because that third column is the real story of this comparison.

How do they compare on performance?

Here’s how the two stack up on the benchmarks Anthropic published this week. Astra’s numbers are as reported by OpenAI:

What it measures GPT-6 Astra Fable 5.1
Multi-step coding in a terminal 57.9% 55.8%
Code changes good enough to merge 53.3% 50.3%
Real office work across 44 jobs (Elo) 1542 1735
Business workflows across connected apps 41.4% 31.4%
Hard multi-subject reasoning (with tools) 57.2% 65.6%
Scientific research tasks 64.6% 52.6%

Translation: Astra edges ahead on coding agents, automation, and science. Fable wins on everyday knowledge work and hard reasoning. Neither is a clean sweep, and every lab picks benchmarks that flatter its own models, so weigh real user feedback just as heavily.

What are real users saying?

GPT-6 Astra

  • “Best model I’ve used,” with a catch. Dan Shipper of Every called Astra the best model he’s used, but noted Fable 5.1 still leads on front-end design. In his testing, one full 5-hour usage window got him only about 1.5 Astra turns before hitting a limit.
  • Power users love it. The How I AI review on ChatPRD called it “a banger” and said it would become the reviewer’s daily driver, citing strong computer-use and UI navigation.
  • Plus subscribers feel shortchanged. On the OpenAI community forum, Plus users pointed out that the launch post promised Astra to “all ChatGPT Plus users,” while in practice it only shows up in Work and Codex. One user said they only got it in regular chat after upgrading to Pro. Another called it a genuine step up and asked for Plus access in chat.

Claude Fable 5.1

  • Top marks for coding. Every’s Vibe Check called Fable 5.1 the strongest coding model they’ve used, and one they’d recommend to non-coders too. Their main complaint: it ignores explicit limits like word counts and overshoots them.
  • The usage burn is the #1 complaint. In Zvi Mowshowitz’s roundup of reactions, feedback was almost universally positive except on token use. One developer reported a single two-hour task eating about 20% of a Max 20x plan’s weekly limit.
  • Some users are switching back. On Hacker News, users praised Fable 5.1’s improved writing style but said their burn rate had spiked. One said they went back to Opus because they kept running out of their 5-hour window.

The twist: Claude Opus 5.5 might be the better buy

Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22. According to Anthropic, it performs at Fable 5.1’s level on most work and costs 40% less to run than the previous Opus.

The numbers that matter for your wallet

  • API price: $4 in / $20 out per million tokens, versus $10 / $50 for both Astra and Fable
  • Included in Claude Pro ($20), and Anthropic raised the 5-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, and Team plans at launch
  • On Anthropic’s own benchmarks it scores higher than Fable 5.1 on terminal coding (66.4% vs. 55.8%) and office work (1846 vs. 1735 Elo)
~2.5×
more work per API dollar than either flagship — and the only one fully included in a $20 plan

Take the vendor benchmarks with a grain of salt. But on price alone, Opus 5.5 gets you roughly 2.5x more work per API dollar than either flagship, and it’s the only one of the three that’s fully included in a $20 plan.

So which should you pay for?

You mostly chat, write, and research on a $20 budget: Claude Pro with Opus 5.5. You get a top-tier model included instead of rationed.

You’re a heavy ChatGPT user who needs the best OpenAI model in regular chat: ChatGPT Pro at $100. Plus won’t get you Astra in chat.

You write a lot of front-end code or run long coding agents: Claude Max with Fable 5.1, or Opus 5.5 if the Fable burn rate hurts.

You’re building an app or automating tasks: Start with the API and Opus 5.5 or Astra Flex, then move up only where you see a quality gap.

Checklist before you spend a dollar

  • ✅ Decide whether you need the model in regular chat or only for coding/agent work
  • ✅ If you’re on ChatGPT Plus, check whether Work mode already covers what you need
  • ✅ If you’re on Claude Pro, try Opus 5.5 for a week before buying Fable credits
  • ✅ For API use, estimate your monthly tokens and compare cached-read prices
  • ✅ Keep any single Astra request under 272K input tokens to avoid double billing
  • ✅ Set a monthly spending cap in your API dashboard before you start
